How to Apply for a U.S. Student Visa (F-1) 

Step-by-Step U.S. Student Visa Flow

1. Get Accepted by a U.S. School

Apply to a SEVP-approved university. Once accepted, you'll receive Form I-20 to start your visa process.

2. Pay the SEVIS Fee

Pay the $350 SEVIS fee to register in the U.S. immigration system. Save the receipt for your interview.

3. Fill Out the Visa Application (Form DS-160) ️

Complete the DS-160 form, upload a passport-style photo, and save the confirmation page.

4. Pay the Visa Application Fee

Pay the visa processing fee as instructed by your local U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

5. Schedule a Visa Interview

Book your appointment at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Apply early as wait times may vary.

6. Get Ready for Your Interview

Be confident, honest, and prepared with documents. Explain your study plans clearly to the officer.

7. Visa Approval & Passport Pickup

If approved, your passport will be stamped with an F-1 visa. Follow the embassy's instructions for pickup.

8. Get Ready to Fly!

You can enter the U.S. up to 30 days before classes start. Carry your visa, Form I-20, and admission letter.

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR STUDENT VISA

 Mandatory Documents (Must Have)

1.Valid Passport

Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay in the U.S.

2.Form I-20

Issued by your U.S. school or university.

Signed by both you and the school official.

3.DS-160 Confirmation Page

This is the form you fill online for the visa application.

Print the confirmation page with the barcode.

4.Visa Application Fee Receipt

 Payment proof of the  visa fee.

5.SEVIS Fee Receipt (I-901)

Payment receipt of the $350 SEVIS fee.

6.Passport-Size Photograph

As per U.S. visa photo standards (2×2 inches, white background).

Carry a physical copy even if uploaded online.

 7.Proof of Financial Support

Documents showing you can pay for your tuition and living expenses while studying in the U.S.

  * Bank statements (yours or your sponsor’s)

   * Affidavit of support (if someone else is sponsoring you)

 * Scholarship award letters (if applicable)

 8.Transcripts & Diploma

Official academic transcripts from all schools you’ve attended.

Diplomas from the last school you graduated from.

9.⁠ ⁠Standardized Test Scores (If Applicable)

TOEFL/IELTS scores (for English proficiency)

GRE/GMAT scores (if required by the program)

 10.Evidence of Ties to Your Home Country

This shows that you intend to return to your home country after completing your studies.

What is SEVIS?
It stands for Student and Exchange Visitor Information System—basically the system that tracks your student status while you’re in the U.S
What is the visa validity period?
It depends on your program, but your I-20 will list the length. After you finish, you get a 60-day grace period to either leave, transfer schools, or apply for OPT.
What are CPT and OPT?
CPT (Curricular Practical Training): Internships or jobs while you're still studying OPT (Optional Practical Training): Work after you graduate for up to 12 months—or 3 years if you’re in a STEM field
